Our Plaice is owned and run by Gregg and Caroline Howard, We are justifiably proud of our traditional style fish and chip business which has come a long way from its humble beginnings back in 1969 where Gregg’s mother spotted an opportunity by firing up the frying range in the family front room in Colley Gate in the Black country, Where portion control, hygiene and health and safety hadn’t even been invented.
Hagley and Kidderminster
We have two shops one in Hagley and the other in Kidderminster and our concept for when we opened both shops was always to be about quality.
We have designed both the shops to appeal to our customers who want top quality ingredients, traditionally prepared and served by friendly helpful staff. The attention to interior design has paid off too and our customers tell us they appreciate the custom made lighting leather seats and waiting area and the chrome fittings.
Our customers return time and time again for our fish and chips during this exciting time for the food industry it’s up to us to stretch the boundaries and provide the widest choice of fish to excite the taste buds. Gregg’s chef training has stood us in good stead and serving first class traditional fish and chips takes a lot of beating.
Fish and Chip shop of the year
This passion and commitment has gained us International recognition since winning the prestigious Seafish Industry fish and chip shop of the year competition in 2004 whereby our Hagley shop was judged to be the best fish and chip shop in the UK.
During that year we became ambassadors for our industry appearing in many TV programmes such as ‘Ready Steady Cook’, ‘Mind your own business’ and local current affairs/ News programmes. With the ultimate achievement and honour of being presented to Her Majesty the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh at St. James’s Palace, during a Maritime reception.
We have gone on to win other National awards Young Fish Fryer of the Year and a Seafood award for the best marketing campaign for Seafood week nationally where we were up against Asda !
Along with local awards such as finalists in the ‘Best of The Black country’ award.
We currently are holders of our industry’s Quality award which recognises quality shops up and down the country. For this award the shop has to be rigorously assessed through many areas of our business.
We are also proud to hold 5 star scores on the doors from Bromsgrove council.
Gregg is currently president of the National Federation of Fish Friars which represents 10,000 fish and chips shops throughout the UK. Caroline runs everything from behind the scenes HR and marketing being her strongest points. Engaging with the local community, working in schools, giving talks to WI and other groups. Caroline also works closely with Seafish and is a national judge for the industry.
